Embracing New Opportunities and Challenges

January 08, 2009

Welcome to a brand new year!

A new year will bring new discoveries, new challenges, new relationships and new opportunities; it’s exciting just to imagine what lays ahead.  There will be scientific and medical discoveries, your team could win the grand final, you may start a new job, attend a new school or college, or move to a new neighborhood.  One thing for sure, the possibilities and opportunities for us are endless.

In the Bible, Jesus talked about new wine, new birth and new clothing, and He used the illustration of a new patch being sown onto an old piece of clothing.  In those days, the fabric wasn’t pre-shrunk, and so to patch your favourite old pair of pants with a new piece of fabric would pull them out of shape as the patch shrunk at a faster rate than the original item.

The great news is, that as we embrace a new year with its challenges and opportunities we don’t have to be restricted by a past that may have shrunk in around us.  Jesus encouraged us not to try and patch up old religious thinking and living, but to receive the freedom of a brand new life from the giver of life Himself.

We live in a great city which at this time of year is vibrant and alive with yacht races, festivals, sports events and family and friends; let’s enjoy this fantastic season as we welcome visitors and new residents to our city and church.

We are in for a fantastic year in 2009.  Many great new things lie ahead for us as individuals, family and as a church, as together we bring the Kingdom to our city and beyond with the revolutionary and powerful life-changing message of Jesus.  This message isn’t about patching a tired and broken system but providing a brand new one.

Look forward to embracing the challenges and opportunities we’re going to share together this year!
